AI Coaching Assistant for Intervals.icu Athletes: How Coaches Can Use Claude Without an Account

By Toby Pattullo
Australian Deaflympic marathon and ultra runner, and the solo developer behind IcuSync.
If you coach athletes who use intervals.icu, you already know how much training data is sitting in that platform. Fitness trends, wellness logs, power curves, planned workouts, activity history. The data is there, but turning it into coaching decisions still takes time.
IcuSync connects intervals.icu directly to Claude AI via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Your athletes can now invite you as a coach, giving you the ability to ask Claude questions about their training, build structured workouts, and push them straight to their calendar. No IcuSync account required on your end. No subscription to pay for.
How it works
The setup takes a few minutes and then stays out of your way.
Your athlete logs into their IcuSync dashboard and sends you a coach invite by email. They choose which tools to grant you access to, ranging from read-only access to full workout building and calendar management. You receive an email with a personal MCP URL. You add that URL as a custom connector in Claude once, and you are ready.
If multiple athletes use IcuSync and invite you to the same email address, they all connect to your single MCP URL automatically. One connector, your entire roster.
What you can do in Claude
Once connected, start a new chat and ask Claude to list your athletes. Tell it which athlete you want to work with and Claude loads their data for the session. From there you can ask natural questions and give natural instructions:
"How has Sarah's fitness trended over the last 8 weeks?"
"Build a 90 minute threshold run for tomorrow and push it to her calendar."
"What does her wellness data look like heading into this week's long run?"
"Show me her power curve from the last 3 months."
Claude reads the data, reasons over it, and acts on it. You are not navigating menus or exporting CSVs. You are just talking through the training.
What tools are available
The tools your athletes grant determine what you can access.
Read tools include training history, activity detail, fitness and fatigue metrics, wellness data, best efforts, athlete profile, planned events, and power curves.
Write tools, which athletes must explicitly grant, cover pushing workouts to the calendar, editing existing workouts, and deleting them.
Athletes control permissions individually. One athlete might grant you full access. Another might prefer read-only. Each can revoke access at any time from their own dashboard.
Do I need an IcuSync account?
No. Your athletes hold the IcuSync subscription. You connect through a token they grant you. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay on your end.
You do need a Claude account to use the connector. Claude's free plan includes one custom connector slot, which is enough for IcuSync coach access. Paid Claude plans give you additional slots if you use other connectors alongside it.
What if I also train myself?
If you have your own intervals.icu account and want to use IcuSync for your own training as well as coaching, you can. Sign up for an IcuSync account, then send a coach invite to your own email address from your athlete dashboard. Replace your athlete connector URL in Claude with your coach token URL. Your coach token covers both your own training data and all your coached athletes in one connector. Use select_athlete in Claude to move between yourself and your athletes.
Managing your token
Your MCP URL is yours to manage independently of your athletes. If you ever lose it, visit the IcuSync For Coaches page, enter your email, and a confirmation link will resend it to your inbox. If you want to regenerate your token for security, the same page handles that too. A confirmation step protects against anyone triggering a regeneration without access to your email.
Getting started
Ask one of your intervals.icu athletes to send you a coach invite from their IcuSync dashboard. Once you receive the email:
- Open Claude on the web or desktop app and go to Customize
- Click the + button next to Connectors to add a Custom connector
- Paste the MCP URL from your invite email and save
- Start a new chat and ask Claude to list your athletes
- Tell Claude which athlete you want to work with using select_athlete
No onboarding flow, no configuration. Just ask Claude about your athlete's training and go from there.
