Using AI to Coach Your Intervals.icu Athletes

If you already coach athletes on Intervals.icu, IcuSync lets you work with all of them from your AI assistant. Connect your own Intervals.icu account once, and every athlete who has accepted you as their coach is there. Ask how a session went, check how someone is trending, or adjust next week's workouts, all in plain language.

It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Grok and other MCP assistants.

Good to know: Your athletes don't need to do anything. If they've already accepted you as their coach on Intervals.icu, IcuSync can see them.

Setting it up

  1. Sign up for IcuSync and connect your Intervals.icu account from your dashboard.
  2. Add your Intervals.icu API key in the Coach section of your IcuSync dashboard. You'll find the key in your Intervals.icu settings, under Developer Settings. This is what lets IcuSync see the athletes you coach.
  3. Add IcuSync to your AI assistant using the MCP URL from your dashboard.
  4. Start a new chat and ask: "Show me my athlete list."

Your own training is in the same list, so you can switch between yourself and your athletes in one connection.

Tip: If your athletes don't appear, refresh the IcuSync connector in your assistant's settings and start a fresh chat. Assistants load the tool list when a chat begins.

Working with an athlete

Tell your assistant who you want to look at, and it switches to that athlete. From there you have the same tools you'd have for your own training: activities and intervals, splits, fitness and fatigue, wellness, best efforts, power curves and their planned calendar.

A few things coaches tend to ask:

  • "Switch to Sam. How did yesterday's threshold session go against the plan?"
  • "How has her fitness trended over the last 8 weeks?"
  • "What does his wellness look like heading into Sunday's long run?"
  • "Which of this week's sessions did she miss or cut short?"
  • "Show me his best 5km and 10km efforts this season."

Plan vs actual for every athlete

When an athlete's completed session is linked to the workout you planned, IcuSync compares them step by step: each target next to what they actually did, how far off any missed step was, and an overall compliance figure. Short efforts like strides are scored separately so they don't skew the main set.

That makes session reviews quick. Instead of opening every interval, you can ask "Did she hit her reps today?" and get a clear answer, including whether she went out too hard or faded at the end.

Why it matters: Reviewing every session for every athlete takes hours. A plan vs actual answer for each one lets you spend your time on the sessions that actually need a conversation.

Updating their calendar

You can build structured workouts and add them to an athlete's calendar, move them, edit them or remove them, just by asking:

  • "Build a 60 minute tempo run for Thursday with 3 x 10 minutes at threshold."
  • "Move Saturday's long ride to Sunday."
  • "Swap tomorrow's intervals for an easy 45 minutes. She's feeling flat."

Workouts sync to their watch or bike computer through Intervals.icu as usual. You can also leave comments on an athlete's activity, which they'll see in Intervals.icu.

Looking across your athletes

You can switch between athletes in the same chat to compare them. Your assistant looks at each one in turn, then brings the results together:

  • "Compare the last 8 weeks of training load for Sam and Alex."
  • "Which of my athletes had the biggest drop in fitness this month?"
  • "Who hasn't logged wellness this week?"

Tip: Name the athletes you want to compare. With a large roster, start with a smaller group, as checking everyone can take a while. Stick to one chat at a time, because the selected athlete is shared across your chats.

Privacy

Your assistant only sees the athletes who have accepted you as their coach on Intervals.icu, and only when you ask about them. IcuSync doesn't store your athletes' training data. Read how that works.

Already using a coach invite?

If one of your athletes invited you through IcuSync instead, that still works, and you don't need an account. See Coach Access with an Athlete Invite.
